4.5 million affected by flood, death toll reaches 15

Nearly 4.5 million people have been affected across 11 flood-stricken districts in Bangladesh. This was confirmed by Md Kamrul Hasan, Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.

He shared this information during a press briefing held today, Friday (August 23), at the Secretariat. The Secretary reported that 887,629 families are currently stranded by floodwaters, with 13 lives lost so far in the ongoing disaster.

The districts affected by the floods include Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Brahmanbaria, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Khagrachari, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj. Among the 15 people, four died in Cumilla, one in Feni, four in Chattogram, one in Noakhali, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Lakshmipur and three in Cox's Bazar districts.

Citing forecasts from the Meteorological Department, Secretary Kamrul Hasan noted that the flood situation is gradually improving. Currently, 188,739 people have taken shelter in relief centers. So far, BDT 35.2 million in cash, 20,150 metric tons of rice, and 15,000 packets of dry food have been allocated for the affected areas.

The Secretary also mentioned that the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Border Guard Bangladesh, Fire Service, and student volunteers from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement are actively involved in rescue operations in the flood-hit regions.
