Flood
situation in Rangpur is improving as the upstream water flow has decreased and
rainfall has lessened. Since Monday afternoon (September 30), the water level
of the Teesta River at the Kaunia point has dropped 11 centimeters below the
danger level. Yesterday night (Sunday, September 29), the water was flowing 31
centimeters above the danger level.
Rabiul
Islam, Executive Engineer of the Rangpur Water Development Board, reported that
at 6:00 pm on Sunday, the water at the Kaunia Teesta Rail Bridge point was
flowing 32 centimeters above the danger level. Although the water rose
overnight, it started receding in the early morning. As a result, residents of
Haibad Kha Char, Godai, Taluk Shahbaz, and Gangachara areas of Tepa Madhupur
and Balapara unions in Kaunia upazila, as well as Isli, Kolkonda, Binbina, and
Salapak Char of Lakshmitari union in Gongachara upazila, are now free from
waterlogging.
Abdullah
Al Hadi, Chairman of Lakshmitari Union Parishad in Gongachara upazila, stated
that the flood situation in his area is improving as the water level
recedes.
Balapara
Union in Kaunia upazila is usually the first to be affected by any rise in the
Teesta’s water levels. Ansar Ali, Chairman of Balapara Union Parishad, also
confirmed that water is receding quickly from his area, but the local residents
continue to suffer from various difficulties despite the decrease in water
levels.
Meanwhile,
the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center of the Water Development Board
reported that the water level at the Teesta Barrage has dropped to 45 centimeters
below the danger level.
According
to the Rangpur Meteorological Office, no significant rainfall was recorded in
the district in the last 24 hours.
