The
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan
Police has arrested Imtiaz Selim, the media coordinator of the banned
organization Hizb ut-Tahrir. Mohammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (DC)
of the DMPI's Public Relations and Media Branch, confirmed the arrest on
Friday, October 4.
He
stated that CTTC arrested him in a raid in the Bashundhara residential area
early on Friday, October 4. A case against him under anti-terrorism laws is at
Shahbagh Police Station in the capital. Additionally, he has been accused of
two cases registered at Pallabi and Khilgaon police stations. Three more cases
against him are currently pending trial. The process of transferring Imtiaz
Selim to court is underway.
On
August 5, the day the Awami League government was overthrown in a student-led
uprising, Hizb ut-Tahrir, a banned organization since 2009, held a public rally
in the capital. The organization claimed that its members were active in the
movement to overthrow Sheikh Hasina's government alongside the students.
Recently, the organization also called for the ban to be lifted during a press
conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
