Confirmed number of deaths related to quota movement exceeded 200

During the clashes in Mymensingh related to the quota reform movement for government jobs, a teenage boy named Md Zaman Mia, 17 was shot and later died. He passed away on Thursday (July 25) while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

As of now, it has been confirmed that 203 people have died since July 17, including Zaman. This death toll information has been gathered from some hospitals, individuals who brought in bodies, and relatives, though data from all hospitals has not been collected.


No information has been released on this matter from any government agency so far.



Thousands of people are currently hospitalized with gunshot wounds and injuries from the clashes, including students, professionals, and law enforcement personnel. Some of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.



According to the police, Zaman Mia was a garment worker from Deuwal Dangra in Nandail, Mymensingh. Confirming this, Inspector Mohammad Bachchu Mia of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost said, "Zaman Mia's body has been placed in the morgue at DMC for autopsy. He was staying at a mess in Baburhat, Sheikhercchor, Mymensingh Sadar. On Sunday (July 21) afternoon, there was a clash between protesters and police in Sheikhercchor. During this clash, Zaman was shot. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with one bullet entering from the left side of his abdomen and exiting from the right."



Earlier, on July 19, a pedestrian named Md Zakir Hossain, 29, who was caught in the clashes in Rayerbag and sustained gunshot wounds, died on Wednesday (July 24) night around 12.15 am while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. According to the police inspector Mohammad Bachchu Mia, Zakir worked at a tailor shop in Rayerbag and lived there with his wife and one daughter. His home was in the Dashmina upazila of Patuakhali district.



It is reported that Zakir was returning home after Friday prayers when he was caught in the clashes in Rayerbag. He was shot in the abdomen during this time. People later rescued him and brought him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died during treatment on Wednesday night around 12.15 am.
