Ruling Awami League Member of Parliament Anwarul Azim has been
murdered in the Indian city of Kolkata, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has
said.
Speaking to media on Wednesday, he described the killing of
lawmaker of Jhenaidah-4 constituency as a planned murder and said that three
Bangladeshis have been arrested in connection with the killing.
In the interest of the investigation nothing more can be said
right now, he added.
The home minister said police from Bangladesh and India are
working on the case and Bangladesh is providing the information that the
Indians are asking for.
To a question, he said that this incident will not deteriorate
the relationship between Bangladesh and India.
Meanwhile, Chief of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan
Police Harun Or Rashid has said that some Bangladeshi criminals murdered the
lawmaker.
Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said that Kolkata police
entered the flat in New Town where Azim was reportedly killed, but they did not
find the body.
Azim went to Kolkata, the capital of the Indian state of West
Bengal, on May 12 on the purpose of treatment. On the following day, he went to
see a doctor. He had been missing ever since. A general diary was filed with a Kolkata
police station on May 18 in connection with his disappearance. Enamul Haque
Emon, a brother of Azim, also filed a general diary on May 19 with Kaliganj
police station. The deceased lawmaker is a resident of Kaliganj.
