Bangladesh has suffered a heavy defeat against India by 280 runs in the Chennai Test. On the fourth day of the match today (Sunday, September 22), the visiting team was bowled out for 234 runs in their second innings.

Earlier, India posted 376 runs in their first innings, while Bangladesh collapsed for just 149 runs in response. India declared their second innings at 287 for 4, setting a massive target of 515 runs for Bangladesh. Apart from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored 82, no other Bangladeshi batsman could offer significant resistance.

Resuming at 158 for 4, Bangladesh continued their second innings today but lost wickets at regular intervals, getting all out in 62.1 overs. The team lost their remaining six wickets in just 24.3 overs. India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 6 wickets for 88 runs, while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja claimed 3 wickets for 58 runs. Ashwin was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, scoring 113 runs and taking 6 wickets.

Ashwin’s performance, which included a century in the first innings followed by six wickets, marked the fourth time he has achieved the rare feat of scoring a century and taking 5 wickets in the same Test match. England’s legendary Ian Botham holds the record for achieving this five times.

Additionally, West Indies’ Sir Garry Sobers, Pakistan’s Mushtaq Mohammad, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, and India’s Ravindra Jadeja have each accomplished this remarkable feat twice in their careers.

The second and final Test of the series will begin on September 27 in Kanpur. Afterward, the two teams will face off in a three-match T20 series.
