The Bangladesh Energy
Regulatory Commission (BERC) has increased the price of liquefied petroleum gas
(LPG) for consumers in the country. The cost of a 12 kg cylinder of gas used in
households has been raised by BDT 35, setting a new price. This marks the fifth
consecutive month of rising LPG prices in the country.
The BERC determines the
price of LPG every month. On Wednesday (October 2), Chairman Jalal Ahmed
announced the new prices at a press conference held at the agency's office.
According to the latest announcement, the price for a 12 kg cylinder for
October has been set at BDT 1456, up from BDT 1421 in September. The newly
announced prices have been effective since 6 pm on Wednesday.
The new price, including
value-added tax (VAT), sets the price of private LPG at BDT 121.32 per
kilogram, up from BDT 118.44 last month. Based on this, the prices for various
sizes of LPG cylinders will be determined.
Sources from BERC have
reported that in June of this year, the price of a 12 kg LPG cylinder was fixed
at BDT 1363. In July, it was increased to BDT 1366, BDT 1377 in August and BDT
1421 in September. This month, the price has been raised to BDT 1456.
Consequently, the cost of a 12 kg LPG cylinder has increased by BDT 93 over the
past five months. However, LPG cylinders are sold at BDT 100-200 higher than
the announced rates.
The price of LPG
supplied by the government company has been maintained at BDT 690. The new
price for LPG used in vehicles (autogas) has been set at BDT 66.84 per liter,
up from BDT 65.26.
Since April 2021, BERC has been determining LPG prices. Each month, the Saudi company Aramco publishes the prices of the main components used in LPG production—propane and butane—known as the Saudi Cargo Price (CP). BERC uses this base price to adjust the LPG prices in the country.
