After
creating history by defeating Pakistan 2-0 in their home Test series, there
were high hopes for Bangladesh’s upcoming India tour. However, those hopes did
not materialize as Bangladesh lost the Test series against India by 2-0. Nazmul
Hossain Shanto’s team lost the Kanpur Test by 7 wickets. On the fifth and final
day today (Tuesday, October 01), the visitors could only set a target of 95
runs for the hosts. Rohit Sharma’s side chased down the target in just 17.2
overs, losing 3 wickets. Bangladesh’s winless record against India in Test
cricket remains, as they have never won in their 15 encounters so far.
Bangladesh
started the fifth day at 26 for 2 but were bundled out for 146 in the first
session, leaving India with an easy target. Although Mehidy Hasan Miraz took
two wickets and Taijul Islam grabbed one, they could not prevent India’s
victory. Riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 51 and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 29, India
comfortably reached the target.
Earlier,
Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah each claimed three
wickets to restrict Bangladesh to 146. Shadman Islam top-scored for Bangladesh
with 50, followed by Mushfiqur Rahim’s 37.
On
the fifth day of the Kanpur Test, Bangladesh resumed their innings with unbeaten
batsmen Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam. However, the partnership was broken
early when Mominul was dismissed by Ashwin for just 2 runs off 8 balls.
After
Mominul’s departure, Shanto and Sadman built a partnership, helping Bangladesh
take the lead after surpassing India’s 52-run advantage. But their stand of 55
runs ended when Shanto was bowled by Jadeja for 19 off 37 balls.
This
dismissal triggered a batting collapse, with Shadman, Liton Das, and Shakib Al
Hasan all returning to the pavilion. Shadman scored a half-century, while Liton
managed just 1 run off 8 balls, and Shakib was dismissed without scoring. This
might have been the final Test innings for Bangladesh’s all-rounder.
Bangladesh’s score slumped from 91 for 3 to 94 for 7 as Mehidy Hasan Miraz
followed the same path as his predecessors. Mushfiqur Rahim, with Khaled Ahmed
at the other end, tried to resist in the last-wicket stand, but it was to no
avail.
In
the first innings, Bangladesh were bowled out for 233, after which India
declared their innings at 285 for 9, thanks to Shakib and Miraz’s spin bowling.
Despite their efforts, the Indian batsmen dominated Bangladesh’s bowlers.
