Explosion at Sitakunda shipyard leaves 12 burnt

At least 12 people suffered burns when an explosion occurred during ship-cutting at a shipyard in Sitakunda, Chattogram. Several others have been injured in the incident. Two units of the fire service are working to bring the blaze under control.

According to the fire service control room, the explosion occurred at SN Corporation’s ship recycling yard in Kumira, Sitakunda, around 12:30 pm on Saturday (September 7), during the cutting of a ship, resulting in a loud blast and a subsequent fire.

Upon receiving the report of the fire, two fire service units rushed to the scene.

Officials at SM Corporation Yard said the injured have been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Nazmul Islam, Assistant Secretary of the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association (BSBRA), confirmed the incident of explosion to Bonik Barta. However, he said that the cause of the blast remains unknown.

Ten people have been admitted to CMCH following the explosion.
