The
use of polythene shopping bags must be stopped to protect future generations
from its harmful effects, stated Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry
of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources.
From October 1, shopping malls must begin using alternative products instead of
polythene bags, and from November 1, this rule will be enforced in kitchen
markets.
Speaking
as the chief guest at a seminar organized by the Department of Environment this
Sunday (September 29), the Adviser emphasized that individuals must take
personal responsibility to stop using polythene. She also announced that a
crackdown on polythene manufacturers will begin on November 1.
During
the event, Environment Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed and Director General of the
Department of Environment Dr. Abdul Hamid, among others, also spoke. They
highlighted the harmful impact of polythene and the need for alternative
products.
The
Environmental Adviser added that the Secretariat will be declared plastic-free
by December, and efforts to phase out polythene will be implemented gradually
in collaboration with shop owners.
Earlier,
the Environmental Adviser inaugurated a fair featuring alternatives to banned
polythene products and visited 24 stalls showcasing environmentally friendly
products such as jute bags, paper bags, and bamboo and cane items.
