Under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, an interim government
is expected to be sworn in today, Thursday (August 8). During a press
conference on Wednesday (August 7), General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the army chief,
mentioned that the interim government might comprise around 15 members.
Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government amid student and
public protests, the country has effectively been without a government for the
past three days. As a result, various political parties, including the BNP, are
urging the swift formation of an interim government. Dr. Yunus was in Paris,
the capital of France. He departed from there yesterday, heading back to the
country. He is expected to arrive at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport
today at 2 PM. The oath-taking ceremony at Bangabhaban is scheduled for 8 PM
tonight.
On Tuesday night, at Bangabhaban, a meeting was held with
President Md. Shahabuddin, the chiefs of the three armed forces, and the
coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, where it was decided
to appoint Professor Yunus as the Chief Advisor of the interim government. The
anti-discrimination student movement has prepared a list of 15 potential
members for the government. This list will be finalized after discussions with
Dr. Yunus upon his return to the country.
