The
U.S. State Department has welcomed Bangladesh's initiative to dissolve its
parliament and form an interim government. Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the
State Department, emphasized that any political change in Bangladesh should
adhere to legal standards.
During
a routine briefing, Miller commented on the current situation in Bangladesh,
stating, “We have seen the announcement that Prime Minister Hasina resigned
from her position and departed Bangladesh. We are monitoring the situation
carefully. The United States stands with the people of Bangladesh.”
Miller
further urged all parties to refrain from further violence. “Too many lives
have been lost over the course of the past several weeks, and we urge calm and
restraint in the days ahea.,” he said.
Regarding
the formation of an interim government, Miller stated, “We welcome the
announcement of an interim government and urge any transition be conducted in
accordance with Bangladesh’s laws.”
In
response to a question, Miller expressed that the United States hopes to see a
reflection of the democratic aspirations of the Bangladeshi people and supports
efforts to establish a democratic government. “We want the people of Bangladesh
to be able to exercise their fundamental freedoms the same way we want people
all over the world to do.” he added.
Miller
also expressed deep regret over recent human rights violations and casualties
in Bangladesh over the past weeks.
